Difficulty Scaling through Incongruity

چکیده
In this paper we discuss our work on using the incongruity measure from psychological literature to scale the difficulty level of a game online to the capabilities of the human player. Our approach has been implemented in a small game called Glove.

Incongruity-Based Adaptive Game Balancing
Commercial games possess various methods of game balancing. Each of them modifies the game’s entertainment value for players of different skill levels. This paper deals with one of them, viz. a way of automatically adapting a game’s balance which is based on the theory of incongruity. We tested our approach on a group of subjects, who played a game with three difficulty settings. The idea is to...
متن کاملVisuomotor Dissociation in Cerebral Scaling of Size.
Estimating size and distance is crucial in effective visuomotor control. The concept of an internal coordinate system implies that visual and motor size parameters are scaled onto a common template. To dissociate perceptual and motor components in such scaling, we performed an fMRI experiment in which 16 right-handed subjects copied geometric figures while the result of drawing remained out of ...
متن کاملN400 incongruity effect in an episodic memory task reveals different strategies for handling irrelevant contextual information for Japanese than European Canadians.
East Asians/Asian Americans show a greater N400 effect due to semantic incongruity between foreground objects and background contexts than European Americans (Goto, Ando, Huang, Yee, & Lewis, 2010). Using analytic attention instructions, we asked Japanese and European Canadians to judge, and later, remember, target animals that were paired with task-irrelevant original (congruent), or novel (in...
متن کاملLearning and knowledge building with wikis: the impact of incongruity between people's knowledge and a wiki's information
The study reported in this article aims at empirically testing a theoretical model of collaborative knowledge building with wikis which was recently introduced by Cress and Kimmerle (2007; in press). This model assumes that individual learning and collaborative knowledge building are based on the interplay between people’s knowledge and the information available in the wiki. This interplay take...
متن کاملHarnessing Context Incongruity for Sarcasm Detection
The relationship between context incongruity and sarcasm has been studied in linguistics. We present a computational system that harnesses context incongruity as a basis for sarcasm detection. Our statistical sarcasm classifiers incorporate two kinds of incongruity features: explicit and implicit. We show the benefit of our incongruity features for two text forms tweets and discussion forum pos...
